The Independent Parrot Newspaper is one of Liberia's most storied independent publications. Founded in 2002 by Liberian journalist, writer, lawyer, and diplomat Moncio Robert Wilmot Kpadeh, The Parrot has spent more than two decades holding power to account and amplifying the voices of ordinary Liberians. From its first edition, The Parrot was built on a single, uncompromising editorial philosophy: advocacy and investigative journalism in the service of the Liberian people. That philosophy has never changed.
Over the course of its publication history, The Parrot earned an enviable reputation as a fearless chronicler of power. The paper broke ground in Liberia's media landscape with rigorous, evidence-driven investigations into corruption, economic crimes, and the misappropriation of public resources — reporting that other outlets either missed or declined to pursue. The Parrot also became the publication of record for documenting bad governance, misrule, and human rights violations at a time when such coverage carried real personal risk. When multinational corporations exploited Liberia's natural resources at the expense of its citizens, The Parrot named them, challenged them, and demanded accountability — regardless of the political or commercial pressure that followed. For that advocacy reporting, our founder Robert Kpadeh and his editors faced countless threats from governments and powerful private interests alike. They did not yield. That record of principled resistance remains the foundation of everything The Parrot stands for
