Fighting for free speech and democracy in Liberia has caused me enormous havoc, ranging from detention, beating and death threats from state actors, especially during the former president Charles Ghankay Taylor’s regime, the President of the Liberia National Association (LNBA), Cllr. Tiawon S. Gongloe disclosed.
Cllr. Gongloe who is also a renowned Human Rights Lawyers indicated that despite the threats posed to his life in a society gradually overwhelmed by chaos and violence, he will remain resolute in fighting for what is good and productive for the upliftment of the Liberian society.
The Lawyer revealed that he remains committed to the principles and ideas of free speech and the rule of law in the country.
Being one of Liberia’s prominent Lawyers, Cllr. Gongloe made the statement recently when he received the honor of CAM Freedom Award which is the highest award by the board and executive members of the Grass Root Alternative Movement in Liberia for his outstanding and sacrificial services to humanity in Liberia.
“CAM Freedom Award” which was conferred on Counselor Gongloe, comes just a little over a week when a group under a banner “Team Gongloe”, which is a conglomeration of political and interest groupings including the Movement to Ensure Liberia Transformation (MELT), Volunteers for Change (Voice), and Liberian People’s Party (LPP) amongst others, called on him to contest the Liberian presidency in the coming 2023 general and Presidential elections.
At the same time, “Team Gongloe “which is a community of Liberians with diverse political, economic and social orientations, but bordered on the concept of a shared platform emphasized that “a better Liberia is possible” when straight adherence to the rule of law is never compromised
The group’s statement also expressed its believe that God has blessed the motherland, Liberia with everything and that its growth and development must be harness only from the rich soil and waters inherited from their ancestors.
Presenting the award, the Chairman for Mobilization and Recruitment of the Grass Root Alternative Movement, Mr. Anthony S. Kollie, extolled Cllr. Gongloe for his courage, commitment and consistency in the fight for the rule of law and social justice in Liberia over the years.
