Poverty, you are man’s worst enemy.
How I wish you had never existed upon this earth.
You are wicked.
You are ruthless.
You are dreadfully humiliating.
You reduce a human being to nothingness,
strip away his pride,
and weaken his confidence.
You make one human being feel inferior to another,
not because he is less worthy,
but because he possesses less or nothing.
Oh, Poverty, you are cruel and dehumanizing.
You take away choices.
You silence voices.
You close doors.
You diminish dreams.
You rob people of opportunities
and, too often, force them to live
at the mercy of others.
For when a man has nothing,
how much control does he truly have
over the direction of his own life?
When hunger dictates his decisions,
when survival becomes his only ambition,
when every basic necessity becomes a struggle,
liberty itself becomes a distant promise.
A man who cannot feed himself,
who cannot shelter his family,
who must constantly depend upon another
for the necessities of life,
may possess legal freedom—
but poverty can make that freedom painfully fragile.
For what is liberty
when hunger controls your choices?
What is dignity
when survival requires humiliation?
What is independence
when every tomorrow depends upon someone else’s mercy?
Poverty does not merely empty pockets.
It can empty hope.
It can crush ambition,
distort dreams,
breed anxiety,
and turn human potential into a daily struggle for survival.
You offer mankind no glory—
only pain, misery, hunger,
disdain, humiliation, anxiety,
and hopelessness.
Hence, humanity must never accept you
as an inevitable destiny.
We must fight you—
through justice,
through education,
through opportunity,
through decent work,
through compassionate leadership,
and through societies where every human being
has a fair chance to rise.
Oh Poverty,
how I wish you never existed.
May the day come
when no child goes to bed hungry,
no parent is humiliated by helplessness,
no family is denied dignity because of deprivation,
and no human being is forced to surrender his dreams
simply because he was born without means.
May humanity defeat you
not merely by creating wealth,
but by creating a world
where wealth, opportunity, dignity,
and the promise of a better tomorrow
are not privileges of the few,
but possibilities available to all.
Poverty, you are man’s worst enemy.
May your reign upon this earth one day end.
And may dignity, hope, freedom, and abundance
take your place.
Oh Poverty, how I spitfully hate you, and crave
the world unites to exterminate you perpetually.
