Monrovia, Liberia – The Movement for Reconstruction and Democracy (MDR) has expelled Senator Samuel G. Kogar following a decision by a majority of the party’s Executive Committee, bringing a sharp disciplinary action against one of its prominent political figures.
The decision was announced on Saturday, August 29, 2026, by MDR Chairman Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah following deliberations on a complaint filed against the Margibi senator.
Kruah said Kogar was given an opportunity to respond to the allegations against him but failed to participate in a subsequent stage of the proceedings despite repeated opportunities.
According to the MDR chairman, both Kogar and his legal counsel failed to appear when the matter was scheduled for further hearing.
The party consequently treated their absence as a waiver of the senator’s opportunity to be heard and proceeded with the committee’s deliberations.
The Executive Committee subsequently recommended Kogar’s expulsion, a decision Kruah said had now taken effect.
The chairman also ordered the party’s administrative leadership to remove Kogar’s photograph from the MDR headquarters, signaling that the senator’s formal relationship with the organization had been severed.
Kruah further directed that any property belonging to the party that may be in Kogar’s possession be returned.
But beyond the disciplinary proceedings, the MDR leadership linked Kogar’s expulsion to a larger disagreement over the party’s political direction.
Kruah said MDR remains politically aligned with the Unity Party and supportive of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration.
He argued that individuals representing the MDR cannot simultaneously act in ways that undermine the political partnership between the MDR and the Unity Party.
The chairman specifically criticized statements attributed to Kogar in recent times, saying some of the senator’s public positions were made without consultation with the party.
Kruah emphasized that such statements should no longer be regarded as representing the official position of the MDR.
The expulsion came against an unusual backdrop.
According to accounts surrounding the meeting, Kogar drove past the MDR headquarters shortly before the decision was announced. He stopped across from the building, remained inside his vehicle and photographed the gathering before leaving.
His brief presence outside the headquarters came as the party leadership prepared to take action against him.
The MDR’s decision now creates a significant political question concerning Kogar’s future relationship with the party and the implications of his expulsion for his activities as an elected senator.
Kogar’s removal from the MDR does not, by itself, remove him from the Liberian Senate. His political status within the legislature and the consequences of the party decision could therefore become subjects of further discussion.
For the MDR leadership, however, the message is clear.
Kruah said party membership carries obligations under the organization’s constitution and bylaws and warned that violations would be addressed through the party’s disciplinary mechanisms.
