Matthew 23:27-28 states; “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity”.
Hypocrisy is endemic and chronic in Liberia. It is a mania plaguing the country in no small way. Liberians are too hypocritical like the Pharisees of ancient times. I can’t fathom nor stomach how Liberians would condemn a nefarious act today and by the dawn of tomorrow, the same group of Liberians, muster the courage to defend the very shady act they earlier condemned. It is astounding how Liberians would praise and celebrate one murderous and roguish leader but summon the temerity to condemn another few days later. How disingenuous, disdainful, dishonest, and obnoxious can we be to ourselves? No wonder why Politics have turned “Poli-tricks” in Liberia. One political group (Party) would fiercely condemn the ruling establishment for misgoverning the country, but when they come to power they do even worse if not the worst. A conundrum I describe as the ‘Psychosis or Lunacy of politics in Liberia’.
All Liberians get from their politicians are bundles of lies, subterfuge, deception, rhetoric, blustery, grandstanding, and filibustering. The debauchery, morass, and decadence of the country continue. The masses remain peasant poor… dwelling in scorching squalors. Liberia, a land endowed with an abundance of natural resources is mostly known for abject poverty, disease, illiteracy, and underdevelopment largely caused by rampant public corruption and perennial bad governance. Interestingly and painfully too, the very weary Liberian masses who continue to be ‘sore victims” of utter misrule are the ones hailing and idolizing the miscreant politicians who impoverish and subject them to a ‘pendulum of trauma’. If this is not absurdity on steroids, I know no other way to describe it. Who are we? Where is our cognition? Where is our sense of pride and dignity? Are we pleased with the disgusting, disheartening, and demeaning socioeconomic nightmare we have been callously submerged into?
Jimmy Cliff sings; “Hypocrites all of you foolish hypocrites, you are going to pay the prize one day…”
May the hypocrites of this country never find peace and solace in their lifetime. Amen and Amen!
Happy Sunday to all and sundry.
