Cummings’ Greatest Political Nightmare -Stuck In The Cookies’ Jar; When Green Leaf Turns To Brown; Indeed, What Goes Up Must Come Down

In the Liberian parlance, it is stated that six days for rogue and Sunday for master, and amidst hints and allegations, it is glaring that the Standard Bearer of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) Mr. Alexander B. Cummings who professed to projecting profound uncompromised tougher hard line on honesty, disciplined-principle-minded, sincerity and an unblemished angel dubbed: “Mr. Clean”, has suffered his most damaging political nightmare.

For what is done in the dark, shall surely come to light, and while this world goes round and round like a spinning wheel, so true, you’re bound to lose whatsoever you steal, that is why if night  could turn to day, a lot of people would surely run away. Of late, the four Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) comprising Liberty Party, All Liberian Party, Alternative National Party and the Unity Party have been nastily embodied in a political quandary exacerbated by internal wrangling, thereby gravely undermining the cohesiveness of confidence, ruining the fabrics of respectability and polluting the internal atmosphere of mutual trust and understanding.

Cummings’ trouble started when the Framework Document was crafted with a salient point enshrined indicating what are expected from and for any member (since the collaborating parties comprised heads of the four respective parties) desirous of heading the ticket of the CPP. With only two of the leaders-former vice president and standard bearer of the Unity Party, Dr. Joseph N. Boakai and ANC’s standard bearer, Mr. Alexander B. Cummings declaring each to head the CPP’s ticket; and with ALP’s leader openly pledging his unflinching support for Dr. Boakai’s candidature, and with two staunch heavyweights from the Liberty Party viewed to put their force and support behind Ambassador Boakai, political jittery could no longer divorce Cummings’ suitability.

Coming from a very high profile and reputable internationalized corporate empire-Coca-Cola and served as one of its trusted, reliable and dependable executives, where rules and standard of conducting business are transparent with unhindered accountability, it is pathetically unfortunate that the retired Coca Cola International executive could enter politics with different mindset putting aside all the decent and praiseworthy values and virtue,  and replaced the latter with questionable modus operandi, has backfired on him regarding a whistle blown by ALP’s head, Benion W. Urey alarming that someone has altered the Framework  Document which he (Cummings) denied, although the act was done under his leadership of the CPP, since the leadership was rotational among the four of them with Urey serving as he first leader.

Before the allegation of altering the Framework could take center space, there were several hints, allegations and accusations reported by the local media that Mr. Cummings was spending handsomely to cause uneasiness in some political establishments, in spite of the reported startling revelations, Cummings and his team rubbished the claim as untrue and unleashed by detractors.

Following total denial vehemently through a news conference held by ANC’s Secretary General at  which time he heavily descended on Urey for spewing lies and is bend on malign Cummings’ hard earned character and repetition with global dimension, the SPOON TALK phone-in show on  Thursday, October 7, 2021 disclosed that a post on Cummings’ personal page that confirmed the altering of the Framework Document also  legitimizes Urey’s claim and exonerates him (Urey), but was later taken down and replaced with a second post that denied altering the Framework Document; something that caused  serious rage leaving pundits to demand his immediate expulsion from the CPP for such diabolical posture, and criminal exposure with an engraved spin of stigma  that is bound to be used against the CPP when the political campaign kicks into full swing if he (Cummings) should head the ticket. Now, whose hand is now reportedly being caught in the cookies’ jar?

Pundits and political observers totally decried the alleged act of criminality emanating  from Cummings’ camp; an individual most people have trusted in keeping with his international corporate disciplinary conduct of fair-play and the receptiveness towards collaborating colleagues and by extension, the people, respect for administrative canons, also stated whether Cummings who claims to have an impeachable character would publish something on his personal page without double-checking to ensure that what is written before being posted, absolutely, and without second thought, meets his (Cummings’) approval before releasing it for publication with global dimension of consumption; upon robustly and radically dismantling the accuser and  his character though a damning news conference hosted by the Secretary General of ANC in complete defense of your character and repetition of being a man always on the right side of decent conduct coupled with the agreed upon, and openly accepted norms governing credible entity (CP), could sanction such firework knowing exactly where the chips would soon fall, is ludicrous, because since you (Cummings), craving on bended knees  to become the next president (which is your constitutional right, once you play by the rule and abide by the prescribed ground ordinances  to ensure the existence of calm, peace and sanctity during the political process) and with his worth of experience in conducting the affairs of establishment would recklessly run a country aground based on such a lackadaisical form and manner the nation and people are witnessing and being confronted with considering what is simmering from your political enclave.

Also, what would Cummings, who has been very critical on incompetent people currently in the government who are unproductively parading the corridors of power, causing immense embarrassment to the state and people, have done as president with such a high profile hide-and–seek stunt after firstly reading from a prepared text infested with such trash while making a serious case for the nation and people based on a dangerously wicked allegation levied against the state and people concerning an unwholesome crunch? Does he still remember the Liberian maxim that “first word goes to court and second word in jail”? Does he still remember that?

The CPP, before the controversial post that seems to have changed the entire narrative, was in a fray of cold war power struggle as Dr. Boakai stated that he has clean character, the requisite experience that has been tested for over four decades with untinted record vividly glaring in the public domain, has the  passion to provide the texture of leadership Liberians have long been yearning for, that he would serve for only one term and that his greatest compliment is to give back to the people what they need the most in their quest for leadership redemption of which he is ideally suited to provide; and will not be vice president for the second time having served as vice president for 12 consecutive years, it’s time to provide the actual and genuine leadership by setting example in the his governorship. On the other hand, Cummings has vowed to continue the race to the finish-line, and promised to fully support the winner if he does not win the CPP’s ticket as enshrined in the Framework, but until then, he’s not going to pause along the way and, submit himself to Ambassador Boakai as his vice president, as being widely anticipated by most Liberians convinced that it would be the real ticket to make the incumbent a truly one term president a loudly echo throughout the country.

It can be recalled that the political leaders of the All Liberian Party, Unity Party and the Liberty Party have accused their colleague, Alexander B. Cummings, of altering the Framework document of the Collaborating Political Parties.

The allegation against Cummings comes after Benoni Urey of the ALP had earlier complained to the Chairperson of CPP, Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence, that some high ranking members of the Collaboration dubiously, viciously, and purposefully altered the framework document binding the four political parties.

But Urey’s rival, Cummings, rebuked the allegation and claimed that the issue of tampering was made without facts and specifics, but intended to evoke acrimony, “we must not allow it to.”

However, weeks later, former Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai of the Unity Party and Sen. Karnga-Lawrence of the Liberty Party backed Urey’s claims immediately after Cummings walked out of a scheduled meeting on Sept. 10, 2021, at a resort.  The CPP trio explained that the Framework Document was developed under Cummings chairmanship, and was tasked with distributing the original copy of the document to them and the National Election Commission, which they have not seen or received.

Sen. Lawrence, in a public manner without mincing her words, said Cummings was the chairman of the CPP when the framework document was finalized, and he should be in the position to speak to issues surrounding the tampering with the same document he refers to each time they are in disagreement with an idea.

“He submitted the document to the National Elections Commission (NEC). He knows best what has happened and he should muster the courage to address the issues as we prepare for the primaries,” the LP political leader said.

Backing Sen. Karnga Lawrence’s claims was Ambassador Joseph Boakai who is eying the CPP standard bearer position against Cummings.  For Boakai, the ANC political leader is inconsistent and should stop running to the media or the public with information in the absence of proper research.

He added “What is big about calling any of us or even each of us to raise a particular concern he has each time, even if he earlier agreed with a point but chooses to disagree later on? He needs to stop running to the press without doing his own homework first.”

Cummings Walks Out

On Sept. 10, before a press conference, Cummings walked out of a leadership meeting with his colleagues from CPP, in Protest against repeated violations of the framework agreement. In a press release, the ANC defended the decision of its leader and argued that his best efforts to halt and reverse the repeated violations of the Framework Agreement by Political Leaders of the Collaboration, forced him to walk out of the meeting.

“Today’s meeting was convened without an agenda; therefore, the Political Leader, having failed to advise his colleagues to abandon their continued violations, was compelled to walk out of a meeting to continue the transgressions. This is without prejudice to the continued membership,” the release said.

The release said it can be recalled that the Political Leaders of the CPP have recently engaged in the usurpation of the functions of the various organs and functionaries of the CPP in violation of the Framework Agreement. And after reviewing the legal implications of’’ the continued actions of the Political Leaders, the ANC has sought to call attention to these transgressions of the Framework Agreement and to urge Political Leaders to self-correct and abide by the constitution of the CPP.

“The internal efforts of the Political Leader of the ANC to get his colleagues to self-correct and reverse course is unsuccessful. Today, again, the Political Leaders sought to proceed to implement a “decision” illegally reached by them without any color of authority in the Framework Agreement to do so,” the ANC said.

Meanwhile, Urey, who brought up the claims of tampering said Cummings should be able to explain why the original copy of the document is not available since the formation of the political front to contest against President George Weah.

“Someone at NEC called and informed me that the copy presented to them was not an original copy, but a photocopy of the framework. In fact, I further learned that the signature page to which we affixed our signatures was removed and attached to a different document,” Urey accused. He said Cummings was the first among them who suggested that lawyers representing each of the four collaborating political parties review the framework document and make amendments where necessary.

“We welcomed the idea and the lawyers worked on the document. At the Liberty Party headquarters, a meeting was held and the lawyers explained to us why certain portions were amended. We all saw logic in their arguments and agreed that the final copy be endorsed so as to prepare us for the political activities ahead. But, sadly, we don’t have the original copy of the framework document with us today, even though the primaries are around the corner,” Urey noted.

The ALP political leader said Cummings should in no way think that they will put the issue of tampering with the Framework document under the carpet.

Urey added: “It is difficult to proceed with the primaries, to determine who becomes the standard-bearer of the CPP, without the use of the framework document.” He furthered that the committee to coordinate activities leading to the primaries has been set up but it cannot work without a document to guide them.

But Urey’s rival, Cummings, rebuked the allegation and claimed that the issue of tampering was made without facts and specifics, but intended to evoke acrimony, “we must not allow it to.”

Internal wrangling has long been ongoing in the CPP, presenting itself as the only alternative to succeed and correct the alleged ills perpetrated by the Weah led government.

At the same time, Cummings rejected his colleagues’ position that Sen. Karnga Lawrence, the current chairperson of the CPP, should continue her term for an additional one month even though it is about to expire. Sen. Lawrence, whose tenure as CPP chair expires on October 1, 2021, was granted an extension by the four political leaders of the CPP, including Cummings at a meeting at a resort in Monrovia.

However, Cummings, who had agreed to the extension a day earlier, wrote Sen. Karnga Lawrence, rejecting her stay at the helm of the CPP beyond October 1, to avoid setting a dangerous precedent.

“As important as it is for the sense of togetherness we always strive to publicly inspire, we forget that a meeting of the four political leaders is not a forum contemplated by the framework agreement for decision-making in the CPP,” Cummings wrote. “In fact, specific roles are defined, and nowhere in the Agreement are the four Political Leaders constituted as an organ of the CPP, or an agency for decision-making and its enforcement. The Framework states the decision-making bodies are the National Assembly, National Advisory Council (which we sit on), and the National Executive Committee.”

Cummings argued that the eight months allotted to any political leader within the collaboration to lead has expired and it is time for Boakai to succeed, a mandate which Boakai appears to have forfeited.

But the UP political leader and Urey said it will be good for Senator Lawrence, the political leader of the Liberty Party (LP), to continue spearheading activities and processes leading to the determination of a standard bearer for the CPP because she is not contesting the primaries for the role.
