MONROVIA, Liberia — River Gee County Senator Jonathan Boycharles Sogbie has commended President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for signing into law legislation establishing the Liberia National Sports Fund Authority, describing the move as a major step toward addressing decades of underfunding and inadequate infrastructure in the country’s sports sector.
The law, titled “An Act to Create the National Sports Fund Authority,” was crafted and sponsored by Senator Sogbie, a former striker for Liberia’s Lone Star national team.
The legislation establishes a dedicated government authority responsible for mobilizing, managing and disbursing financial resources for sports development across Liberia.
The Senate overwhelmingly passed the bill on July 23, 2025, before the House of Representatives concurred with the measure. President Boakai subsequently signed it into law, marking a significant policy development for Liberia’s sports sector.
Speaking Monday, August 17, 2026, following the approval and publication of the Act as a handbill, Senator Sogbie described the legislation as a long-overdue response to the financial and logistical difficulties that have constrained Liberian athletes and sporting institutions for decades.
“This Act is not just legislation. It is a lifeline for our athletes, coaches, and the future of sports in Liberia,” Sogbie said.
“For too long, our national teams and young talents have suffered from neglect. This law ensures sustainable and transparent financing for sports,” he added.
Under the new law, the National Sports Fund will be financed through levies imposed on luxury and non-sport-related goods.
The Fund will also receive resources through annual budgetary subsidies, donations and grants.
The legislation specifically earmarks funding for the construction, rehabilitation and modernization of stadiums and other sporting facilities across the country.
It will also support Liberia’s national teams participating in international competitions, youth development and talent identification programs, as well as the training and certification of coaches and technical personnel.
The creation of a dedicated funding mechanism is expected to provide a more predictable financial foundation for sports development while reducing reliance on irregular government allocations and emergency fundraising.
The National Sports Fund Authority will be administered by a Board of Directors, with legislative oversight intended to provide an additional layer of accountability in the management of sports resources.
The law also requires funds received by the Authority, including donations and government subsidies, to be subjected to annual independent audits.
Audit findings are to be made public, creating a transparency mechanism designed to ensure that resources allocated to sports are properly managed and used for their intended purposes.
For a sports sector that has frequently struggled with inadequate funding, poor facilities and limited support for athletes and coaches, the accountability provisions could become as important as the funding mechanism itself.
The legislation could also have implications for sports development outside the capital, particularly through its emphasis on facilities and grassroots programs.
President Boakai’s endorsement of the Act is consistent with his administration’s stated commitment to revitalizing grassroots sports and improving sports infrastructure across Liberia’s counties.
If effectively implemented, the new framework could provide opportunities for young athletes to receive structured training, improve access to sporting facilities and strengthen Liberia’s ability to prepare national teams for regional and international competitions.
For Senator Sogbie, who has transitioned from national football to legislative advocacy, the law represents an effort to address structural problems he says have held back Liberia’s sporting potential.
The challenge now shifts from legislation to implementation, with the effectiveness of the National Sports Fund Authority likely to depend on the timely mobilization of revenue, transparent financial management and equitable distribution of resources across Liberia’s sporting communities.
